Typically, the drug therapy of a parenteral administration of the large amount of solution into the body through vein is called as 'Infusion Therapy'. A drug in a dosage form to fulfill such drug therapy is called as 'Infusion solution'.

Conventionally, a 'Infusion' has a broad concept that includes every drug therapy that injects solution into the body through parenteral administration path excluding Gastrointestinal tract without a distinction of volume. Irrigation and dialysis as well as injection may be included in this concept, but recently used general concept of 'Infusion Therapy' means the intravenous infusion therapy that supplies water-electrolyte, nutritions or drugs through vein and corrects the abnormal condition of body fluid. The ‘Infusion’ means a large amount of intravenous injection solution that realizes the dosage form to fulfill such drug therapy.

Conventionally, the infusion is I.V. injection but every type of infusion for I.V. injection is not included. Generally, the infusion means the 'large volume' of intravenous injectable solution over 100mL among the intravenous injectable solution as defined in Korea Pharmacopoeia.

Basic parenteral infusions

Infusion is classified into a carbohydrate infusion and an electrolyte infusion. A complex electrolyte infusion is included that consists of a series of infusion which was adjusted artificially to the composition of carbohydrate infusion and electrolyte infusion, which is the characteristic of a composite in these two classifications.

Nutrient parenteral infusions

It consists of an amino acid infusion to supply protein, a lipid infusion to supply fat, a infusion for total parenteral nutrition (TPN) as a infusion of nutrition supply to be applied to the parenteral nutrition (PN).

Specialized parenteral infusions

It is the infusion product for the treatment of specific disease through infusion therapy, which includes a substitute for artificial plasma or an osmotic diuretics, etc
